Apple Says You Shouldn’t Put A Camera Cover On Macbook

Are you one of those people who cover their webcam on laptop to prevent it from being spied on? Well, Apple says you shouldn’t do so!

In case you choose to put a camera cover anyway, Apple has warned MacBook owners not to close their laptop with the camera cover on. In a support page, Apple writes that it could damage the laptop and result in a cracked display because “the clearance between the display and keyboard is designed to very tight tolerances.”

While this advice could strike as pretty obvious to many users, it seems that wasn’t the case with others as Apple had to literally put this in writing.

Putting a little plastic camera covers with a sliding mechanism is quite common nowadays. But they could damage your laptop screen pretty bad if you shut the laptop with the cover still on, and as we know, Apple’s laptop repairs are extremely costly.

Apple Says You Don’t Really Need Camera Covers

Instead of using a camera cover, Apple says users should trust the green LED beside the camera on a MacBook that turns on whenever the camera is active. The company says that “the camera is engineered so that it can’t activate without the camera indicator light also turning on.”

The company did acknowledge the fact that some people don’t have much choice in this matter and they are mandated by their employers to use a camera cover. In such cases, Apple says you should always remove the cover before closing the laptop.

I would personally suggest using a strip of tape if you have trust issues with the green light. But keep in mind that Apple warns against using anything that is “thicker than an average piece of printer paper (0.1mm),” and also prohibits using camera covers that leave adhesive residue behind.
