Pixel and hardware issues have become a thing now. Starting with the original Google Pixel, nearly every device in the entire Pixel lineup has seen its fair share of hardware issues, and Google Pixel 5 is no different.
We previously reported that several Google Pixel 5 owners are witnessing a gap between the display and the frame on their brand new devices. The gap is not huge enough to show the internals but has made users worry that it might collect dust and water, and therefore compromise the IP68 rating.
After much uproar from Pixel 5 owners, Google says it has investigated the issue and finally come up with a “solution.” Replying to the Pixel 5 screen gap issue thread on Google Support, Community Specialist David Pop said that “the variation in the clearance between the body and the display is a normal part of the design of your Pixel 5.”
He also cleared up concerns regarding the loss of IP68 rating due to the gap between the screen and the Pixel 5 body. “There is no effect on the water and dust resistance or functionality of your phone.” However, he said Google would look up each case “to address any concerns they may have.”
It appears Google isn’t ready to address it as a manufacturing fault just yet. Instead, it plans to replace Pixel 5 devices where the gap is problematic.
A Google Pixel 5 teardown last week revealed that Google has used five clips in addition to adhesives to keep the screen attached to the body, so there is no question of the screen popping off entirely. In the video, the YouTuber speculates that the Pixel 5 screen gap issue could have been caused due to adhesive loosening due to heat.
Nevertheless, the screen gap is still weird to look at. A user on Reddit jokingly wrote, “I’ve read you can just put it in a case and it’ll disappear”. Another user wrote: “Apple: you are holding it wrong, Google: the gap is part of the design.”
