A new version of OpenIndiana Hipster is now available for download. For starters, the OpenIndiana Operating system is derived from OpenSolaris and is based on illumos.
Hipster uses a rolling release model and uses MATE as its default desktop environment. After 6 months of development, the 2020.10 update brings lots of additions and improvements.
OpenIndiana Hipster 2020.10: What’s New?
1. BHyVe (Pronounced as Bee Hive), which helps in the virtualization of guest operating systems like illumos, OpenBSD, NetBSD, etc., is now included in the OS. This has been made possible with the help of folks over OmniOSce.
2. Two Remote Desktop Environments, FreeRDP and Remmina, have been added.
3. Squeak Virtual Machine has been added, making Squeak Smalltalk and Cuis Smalltalk possible to run on the OS.
4. MATE has been updated version 1.24 and GCC 10.2.0 has been added.
5. VirtualBox, VLC, and qt5 have also been updated to versions 6.1.16, 3.0.11.1, and 5.12.9.
6. Python 3.7.7 has been added, and Python 3.5 has been updated to 3.5.10. Python 3.4 has been removed.
7. Golang, PHP, and Git updated to versions 1.15.3, 7.3.21, and 2.29.2, respectively.
The development team said, “we weren’t able to update some important packages like Firefox and Thunderbird. These are high on our agenda, but due to our limited developer and test capacities, we couldn’t care for them yet.”
“We are planning for improvements for our infrastructure to lower the barriers for testing and developing OpenIndiana Hipster,” they added.
Folks over OpenIndiana are looking for developers to contribute to the project. Hence, if you have a knack for problem-solving in programming, now is a great time to reach out to them and contribute.
